Across global insurance markets, AI is moving from a future ambition to an operational core. As underwriting, claims assessment and fraud detection shift toward machine-learning and automation, insurers are being asked to rebuild long-established systems around data, models and real-time decisioning.
For QA and software-testing teams across banks and insurance firms, this transformation is raising fundamental questions about how to validate, monitor and safeguard increasingly complex AI-driven workflows.
This is the context captured in a recent SPD Technology analysis called ‘The Power of AI in Insurance: Existing Opportunities and Upcoming Trends’, which details how AI is reshaping some of the industry’s most critical functions. It also shows why testing and governance structures must evolve just as quickly.
The SPD Technology analysis explains that “AI in insurance companies works the same way as in any other industry. AI, specifically machine learning algorithms, processes vast amounts of data to identify patterns in it.”
It adds that once these patterns are identified, analytics can “uncover hidden correlations, predict trends, and calculate the probability of various events occurring.”
This shift is already visible across underwriting, where models now support risk scoring and customer segmentation, and across fraud detection, where insurers rely on systems that “identify patterns that seem like unusual user behaviour.”
In claims, computer-vision applications can “analyse images and videos to assess damages,” automating one of the most labour-intensive stages of the insurance lifecycle.
Generative AI and simulation tools are beginning to play a role as well. The analysis notes their ability to generate synthetic data and strengthen risk-modelling capabilities by exposing models to scenarios that do not exist in historical claims files. These tools also accelerate document generation and improve consistency in policy servicing.
The analysis emphasised that organisations will need “seamless integration, ethical governance of data, and long-term scalability,” especially as AI becomes responsible for increasingly sensitive and high-impact decisions.
New trends bring new testing pressure
The next phase of AI adoption in insurance is likely to include usage-based insurance, real-time behavioural analysis and more sophisticated cyber-risk modelling.
These trends will rely on continuous data ingestion from connected devices and risk-monitoring platforms, expanding the volume and unpredictability of inputs that models must process.
For QA teams, this signals an escalating testing challenge. AI models that process “vast amounts of data” must be validated against both expected and unexpected behaviour.
Systems that “identify patterns that seem like unusual user behaviour” must be tested for false alarms and inconsistent thresholds.
Vision-based claims tools that “analyse images and videos to assess damages” must be evaluated across different lighting conditions, image types and geographic contexts.
Integration issues become more complex as insurers seek the “seamless integration” highlighted in the analysis, especially when connecting legacy systems with AI engines and external data streams.
Testing risks hidden inside the AI boom
Although the analysis focused on opportunities and trends rather than testing risks, the implications are clear. If models uncover “hidden correlations,” those correlations must be scrutinised to ensure they do not introduce unintended bias.
If analytics “predict trends,” QA teams must confirm they remain stable as new data arrives. If systems detect “unusual user behaviour,” testers must validate that legitimate claims or policy activities are not misclassified.
The move toward image-based and video-based claims handling introduces additional sensitivity, as small distortions can alter model results.
The growing use of synthetic data strengthens modelling and expands test coverage, but it also requires governance frameworks to ensure that synthetic inputs remain realistic and representative.
Perhaps the biggest structural challenge is operational: insurers are being asked to build AI-enabled systems with “long-term scalability,” which requires testing disciplines that operate continuously rather than episodically.
In summary, the study highlighted a sector on the cusp of profound change. AI is altering how insurers assess risk, detect fraud, process claims and interact with customers, and with every new model or workflow, the burden on software-testing teams increases.
As the industry accelerates toward an AI-driven future, testing must evolve alongside it. The insurance firms that succeed will be those that treat QA not as a final project phase, but as the core mechanism for ensuring that AI systems remain accurate, fair, stable and trustworthy in the years ahead.
