What does software quality assurance for the fintech era look like?
Paul Baker, senior director, head of software quality at Chase, recently argued it requires a new way of thinking.
“It is hard to recruit the best software teams and to then overcome the ‘them and us’ barriers between engineers and testers, instilling accountability and co-operation,” he said at the QA Financial Forum London in September.
The key to moving what Baker has dubbed QA+ (quality assistance) is to develop truly adaptable teams, with shared accountability and a culture where “developers do testing”, he said.
In accelerating test automation, he established defect prediction and containment as a key benchmark. “We define that as how good we are at preventing software issues from going into production,” Baker explained.
“Our initial target was 80% and now we are at 85%”.
Technology is key to moving towards a quality assistance model. Automation and AI tooling is also helping Chase beat its benchmarks for predicting production defects and Baker is now using LLMs to support completeness and acceptance requirements for application delivery.
“Our aim is to automate governance of all [software development] controls,” he concluded.

Baker spoke last month at the London conference of the QA Financial Forum, a global series of conference and networking meetings for software risk managers, which took place on September 11, in the heart of the British capital.
The agenda was designed to meet the needs of software testers working for banks and other financial firms working in regulated, complex markets.
The full-day event, held at the America Square Conference Center in the heart of the City, brought together more than 100 expert speakers and delegates from leading firms including JP Morgan Chase, LSEG, STOXX, Nationwide, Lloyds Banking Group, HSBC and a range of others, who shared their insights and experience on topics such as networking testing, data management and the unstoppable rise of AI.
Also discussed were timely issues such as enterprise benchmarks for compliance, DORA and regulation, as well as green software, sustainability in testing and overall ESG principles in the QA space.
