Erste Digital, the Vienna-based technology arm of Austrian bank Erste Group, claims it is reshaping how large European banks approach software quality, testing and digital resilience as part of a broader move toward cloud-native banking platforms.
Its currently ongoing cloud modernisation illustrates how QA and engineering practices are becoming central to innovation in regulated financial services environments.
Describing itself as “the digital muscle and heart of Erste Group,” Erste Digital supports one of Central and Eastern Europe’s largest banking groups, serving more than 16 million customers across the region. Erste Group is one of the largest financial service providers in Central and Eastern Europe with roughly 2,000 branches in seven countries.
eadquartered in Vienna, Austria, the organisation designs, builds and operates digital platforms spanning retail and SME banking, internal enterprise systems, data platforms and customer-facing applications for Erste Group’s banking operations across multiple markets.
Quality and scale
Rising customer expectations and competitive pressure have driven Erste Digital to rethink how its platforms are built and tested.
Traditional on-premises data centres, while robust, limited the organisation’s ability to adopt AI-driven services and scale data-intensive workloads efficiently, challenges that directly affect QA teams responsible for validating performance, reliability and resilience.
“Innovation is at the heart of our strategy,” stressed Ulrich Buchberger, Product Owner of Cloud Platforms at Erste Digital.
“While our robust data centers support our traditional banking applications and serve both employees and customers, we recognise that they are not ideal for adopting AI and fully leveraging our data.”

Buchberger added that “from both a technological and economic perspective, the cloud offers a much more attractive alternative.”
For QA and testing teams, this shift opens the door to more consistent environments, automated infrastructure provisioning and faster feedback cycles, key enablers of resilient software delivery in banking.
Testing agility
A key element of Erste Digital’s cloud approach is the use of managed services, allowing engineering and QA teams to focus more on application quality and less on maintaining underlying infrastructure.
“Using out-of-the-box managed services frees us from non-value-added infrastructure management and maintenance tasks. This allows us to be more responsive and competitive when deploying new services,” said James D’Alfonso, who is Lead Cloud Engineer at Erste Digital.

“Furthermore, Google Cloud gives us the flexibility and elasticity we need to exploit our data on a large scale.”
Elastic infrastructure and automated provisioning enable QA teams to test at scale, validate performance under load and support continuous integration and delivery pipelines without the constraints of fixed environments.
Beyond technology, Erste Digital has emphasised close collaboration with Google Cloud’s consulting teams to ensure continuity, security and regulatory alignment throughout the migration, a critical factor for testing and assurance teams operating in tightly regulated financial environments.
“Naturally, our selection process involved a rigorous evaluation of each supplier’s technologies. Google Cloud quickly stood out with its data platform,” Buchberger shared.
“But technology was only part of the equation. We were seeking a committed partner with a dedicated and stable team, rather than impersonal support with changing contacts.”
He added that “from the outset, we made it clear that we wanted experts integrated into our teams for the duration of the project.”

The programme began with the creation of a secure cloud landing zone, supported by infrastructure-as-code and standardised deployment patterns.
This foundation has improved deployment reliability and repeatability, helping QA teams embed testing more deeply into delivery pipelines.
Early results from the cloud transition include significantly faster data processing and analytics, enabling quicker validation of data-driven features and more frequent testing cycles.
By reducing processing times from minutes to seconds, Erste Digital has increased its ability to iterate safely while maintaining service stability.
“Of course, the richness of Google Cloud’s technological offering was essential, but the real success of our project lies in a combination of Google Cloud’s solutions and the strong partnership we forged with the Google Cloud Consulting team,” Buchberger pointed out.
“We created a unified team, free from technological limits, capable of achieving anything,” he concluded.
