How Crédit Agricole turned performance assurance into a strategic advantage

In the high-stakes world of banking IT, where regulatory deadlines loom and any performance lapse can erode customer trust, French bank Crédit Agricole’s internal IT arm, CA-GIP, has quietly engineered a robust quality assurance strategy.

Over recent years, the Paris-based group has transformed how it tests applications, particularly for performance and load. In doing so, the bank claims it managed to reduce incidents in production by over 30%.

CA-GIP powers more than 80% of Crédit Agricole’s IT production. It runs six data centres, supports over 70,000 servers, and oversees more than 190,000 workstations. With more than 4,000 deployments each month, the sheer scale of its digital backbone leaves little margin for error.

As legislative changes in finance often require deployment in under a month, CA-GIP recognised that waiting until late in the delivery cycle to test performance exposed the bank to unacceptable risk.

The organisation decided to treat performance testing not as an afterthought, but as a central pillar of its QA approach. At the core of that shift was the adoption of Tricentis NeoLoad as its load and performance testing tool of choice.

According to Laurent Bourgeois, head of performance testing at CA-GIP, the deciding factor was usability combined with deep integration capabilities.

“NeoLoad offers a very intuitive interface that enables quick onboarding and efficient script creation,” Bourgeois explained, stressing that “its seamless integration with our existing monitoring tools, including Dynatrace, allows us to deeply analyse performance test results.”

Those attributes proved essential for a large-scale organisation with multiple teams and services. Simplicity lowered the barrier to adoption, while integration with existing monitoring tools ensured that performance oversight was woven into the wider observability stack.

In 2022, CA-GIP extended its performance testing capability by implementing NeoLoad Web. That move gave the organisation the ability to automate tests and embed them into CI/CD pipelines, making load tests part of the continuous deployment fabric.

This was not a cosmetic change but a turning point: performance testing began shifting left, closer to development, with quality gates and “as-code” methodologies driving the process.

Building a culture of performance assurance

CA-GIP’s performance testing strategy now rests on three interlinked principles: increasing component-level testing early in the development cycle, optimising end-to-end validation, and embedding testing into DevOps workflows through automation and as-code capabilities.

By pushing tests earlier and automating as much as possible, CA-GIP has reduced incidents in production by more than 30% over six years. The acceleration of the validation phase means that testing no longer delays launch windows, even when regulatory changes demand rapid roll-outs.

Bourgeois summarised the underlying philosophy succinctly: “The key to securing production is to test early, automate as much as possible, and make performance testing a standard practice.”

Performance risk detection has become part of the delivery pipeline itself rather than a separate downstream process, he added.

Looking ahead, CA-GIP is planning even more ambitious automation. Its 2025 roadmap envisions developers running performance tests independently within their own environments, accelerating scenario tailoring for new business requirements.

The group also intends to explore AI-powered performance analysis to enable predictive testing.

“Innovation with confidence” is how Bourgeois described the next chapter. “Performance testing isn’t just about preventing incidents; it enables us to innovate with confidence. We’re building a more resilient digital infrastructure, one that can evolve to meet our future challenges.”

For QA and testing teams across banking and financial services, Crédit Agricole’s experience highlights the growing importance of shifting performance testing left, integrating it with DevOps workflows, and embedding automation as a standard.

Adopting tools that combine simplicity with analytical depth has helped CA-GIP transform performance testing from a defensive control into a strategic enabler of digital resilience.
