Trust Bank’s cloud-native software delivery highlights new role for QA

As banks accelerate cloud modernisation and digital-first strategies, QA and software testing teams are under growing pressure to prove that faster software delivery does not come at the expense of resilience, security, or regulatory control.

Across global financial services, release pipelines that once prioritised caution and manual oversight are being re-engineered to support continuous delivery, automated testing, and embedded compliance, all while systems remain under constant regulatory scrutiny.

Against this backdrop, Singapore’s digital banking sector has emerged as a proving ground for how cloud-native platforms, automation, and quality engineering can coexist with stringent oversight.

The experiences of newer digital banks are increasingly being watched by traditional financial institutions seeking to modernise legacy environments without introducing new operational risks.

Trust Bank, which claims to be Singapore’s first fully digital bank, sits firmly within this shift. Launched in September 2022, the bank was built from the ground up on a cloud-native architecture and has rapidly scaled its customer base in a competitive market.

Operating entirely digitally, Trust Bank delivers everyday banking services through mobile-first platforms while maintaining the levels of reliability and trust expected of a regulated financial institution.

As the bank expanded, its technology teams encountered a challenge familiar to many QA and engineering leaders in financial services: how to maintain speed and flexibility in software delivery while meeting security, compliance, and audit requirements.

According to Srinivas Patil, chief technology officer at Trust Bank, “speed and agility are critical to us, but so is maintaining the trust we’ve built with our customers.”

Therefore, “we needed to find a way to keep delivering updates quickly while ensuring everything met the necessary security and compliance standards,” Patil added.

Initially, even small application changes could take up to two weeks to move through reviews, approvals, and production deployment.

For a digital-only bank operating at scale, such delays risked slowing innovation and increasing operational friction across development and testing teams.

Trust Bank responded by redesigning how quality, security, and compliance checks were integrated into its software delivery lifecycle.

Rather than relying on manual reviews late in the process, the bank embedded automated controls directly into its continuous integration and delivery pipelines, aligning testing activities more closely with deployment workflows.

“By automating compliance and embedding security checks into our pipeline, we’ve been able to significantly reduce the time it takes to bring updates to production,” Patil stressed.

He added that the approach allows engineering and QA teams to “focus more on innovation and less on process.”

The impact on delivery cadence was significant. Deployment lead times were reduced from around two weeks to roughly 24 hours, while compliance and security requirements continued to be enforced automatically throughout the pipeline.

For QA teams, this meant quality gates became continuous rather than episodic, with testing, verification, and risk controls applied consistently across releases.

Rajay Rai, chief technology information officer at Trust Bank, said the shift was about reducing friction across the entire delivery chain.

“We really wanted to offload this entire onerous task of thinking about how to evolve the supply delivery chain lifecycle,” he shared.

The resulting platform supports “resilient, secure, and optimised infrastructure that can scale as Trust Bank continues to grow,” Rai added.

For QA and software testing leaders at global banks, Trust Bank’s experience reflects a broader industry transition. As institutions adopt microservices, cloud platforms, and more frequent release cycles, quality engineering is increasingly embedded into the heart of delivery pipelines rather than positioned as a final checkpoint.

Trust Bank’s journey shows how testing, compliance, and resilience can be treated as enabling capabilities rather than constraints, a model that many established financial institutions are now seeking to replicate as digital transformation accelerates across the sector.
